If you do metal or woodworking projects, the use of reliable saw equipments is highly needed. Of course, the most integral part of the saw equipment that you need to pay careful attention to, is the blade. Saw blades must be sharp enough to be able to smoothly cut through different materials without breaking or tearing them. Blades for saw equipments come in different varieties and types. Each type is mainly designed to match the cutting tools they will be working with. Therefore, it is of the essence that you are familiar with the different types available, so you would know how to distinguish them. One thing you must bear in mind is that saw blades are not interchangeable. You have to only use the appropriate type and size of saw blade for a particular cutting tool. This is important to ensure your safety by precluding accidents.

Types Of Blades For Saws

Generally, saw blades are categorized in two major classifications – circular saw blades and traditional hand saw blades. Both the two main types have the same subcategories which include the rip blades and crosscut blades.

Rip blades have limited number of deep teeth intended to clear away the material that is being cut. They can quickly cut through the material, but do not leave clean finishes. Crosscut blades, on the other hand, cuts with the use of carbide, which alternates cutting between left and right. This type of blade generates fine finishes on different materials.

If you are looking for both the benefits of rip and crosscut blades in one, then you can take advantage of a combination blade. They come in a vast array of tooth counts ranging from 24-tooth to 80-tooth. As a general rule, the more teeth the blade has, the finer the finish. Blades with low tooth counts cuts aggressively but leaves rough finishes, while a blade with higher tooth number will produce cleaner finishes.

For those who have very particular cutting needs, the use of specialty blades would be more ideal. These types of blades are primarily designed for a particular hand tool or a specific type of material to be cut. For instance, concrete saw blades are perfect for cutting through hard concretes. Jig saw blades are another types of specialized blades typically use for tile cutting.

Saw blades are available in many different sizes that typically range from 5" to 12". However, each cutting tool can only use a specific size of blade intended for that particular type. Therefore, be sure to carefully read the instruction manual that comes with the cutting tool to ascertain the right size of blade used for that model. A word of caution, you must never attempt to use a blade that does not have the right size recommended for your saw.

Technically, circular blades are 7-1/4" in diameter while radial arm saw, compound miter saw and table saw blades often use blades that are 10" or 12".

Maintaining Your Blades

When you regularly use your blades for cutting, they can become dull that would result to decreased efficiency. Once a substantial amount of sap has accumulated onto the carbides, you have to start getting rid of them with the application of the right type of cleaning solution. You have to refer to the tool's manual in order to ensure that you will be applying the appropriate type of cleaning solution. You can also ask the supplier on what type of solution would be best for the type of blade you have.

Furthermore, you can opt for the services of professional saw sharpener. Sharpening your saw blade will help increase its life and cutting precision. If you have bought a blade from a known manufacture, like the freud saw blades, they normally provide sharpening services for free.
