Safety Tips For Operating Scissor Lifts

By Tommy Thompson

When constructing high-rise buildings it is inevitable to deal with elevated inaccessible areas, the introduction of numerous types of aerial lifts have made construction tasks much easier. Among the different types of aerial lifts, the scissor lift remains one of the best options to easily access the work area. Its platform only moves vertically, and functions via connected folding supports, which create a zigzagging “X” design. They are commonly used in industrial or construction sites where multiple workers need to be in the same platform. The scissor’s action can be hydraulic, mechanical, or pneumatic. Additionally, they are powered by either gas or electricity. A diesel or gas-powered scissor lift is ideal for outdoor use but can never be used indoors. An electric scissor lift, however, is quiet and emission-free making it the excellent choice for warehouses, or other indoor task.

Safety Precautions

Whether you are operating a manual or portable scissor lift, it is of the utmost importance to follow safety guideline and procedures. Here are some of the most effective ones:

  • Train operators before they use the lift. Most lift operators often haven’t received the proper training to know how to safely and properly operate this type of lifts. Prior to operating such heavy equipment, one should undergo training about various issues, including the load capacity; requirements of the manufacturer; procedures for dealing with dangers; the maximum projected load; and hazards involving falling, falling objects, and electricity. It is also important to receive re-training under certain circumstances, such as if the dangers change or an operator is controlling a lift incorrectly.
  • Assess the job site where the operator will use the aerial lift. Before commencing, be sure to do several checks, and always make sure that the surface is leveled. Furthermore, ensure that the slope of the surface isn’t greater than the maximum number that the manufacturer has set. Also, look for hazards such as holes, bumps, or debris
  • Evaluate the lift before operating it. Inspection is critical to ensure that the lift is functioning properly, and in good condition. Regardless of what the task involves and where it takes place, it is crucial to inspect the aerial lift first. It would be ideal if you have read the safety guidelines indicated in the lift’s manual. For instance, a genie scissor lift would definitely include a manual stating the proper guidelines that must be adhered before operating the lift.
  • Inspect important areas of the lift. Items that you should examine include emergency controls, fall-protection gear, operating controls, safety devices, as well as wheels and tires. Regardless of whether you are using platform scissor lifts or other types, you should regularly search for potential leaks. Look for parts that are ajar or missing, or things such as the fuel-system or hydraulic fluid.
  • Make repairs and replace parts as it is needed - It is important that a certified mechanic makes all the repairs on the aerial lift, as they are needed. When parts need replacing, it is crucial to change them with the proper parts. Avoid substituting parts, as they could ultimately result in the failing lift components leading to accidents.

Proper And Safe Use Of Scissor Lifts

Here are some important tips to help ensure that you use scissor lifts properly:

  • Close the platform’s doors or chains.
  • Never exceed the load-capacity limits of the manufacturer.
  • Prevent unauthorized usage such as by locking the aerial lift
  • Get written permission from the manufacturer of the scissor lift before making modifications
  • Keep the operator’s manual at the job site
  • Use signs and cones to create work-zone warnings near high traffic areas
  • Use proper restraining devices when required
  • Implement correct fall-protection for operators
  • Never lean over or climb on the guardrails

Several types of scissor lifts can make construction work easier. However, it is crucial to use safety precautions in order to keep the operator and those around the lift, safe. These tips can give a lift to safeguarding scissor lifts!

Just one quick tip to add, there are a number of fall arresting industrial products that should be used for elevated work. They usually consist of a harness and lanyard that can be tied off to prevent workers from falling to the ground. Great hub!

If hiring the lift, the company should supply you with safety information. That is still no substitute with using a trained person, but often its a question of getting the right operator and getting the right information off the supplier (rental or bought)
